With the recent spate of kidnappings that have occurred in the island over the last few weeks please find below some tips and hints on personal security and on security of your children.
1 When dropping off children to any activity please ensure that the child is received by the appropriate adult or someone known to you.
2 Remind children not to talk to or accept gifts or lifts from strangers.
3 Ensure that you are aware of the child's movements i.e. where they are going , who they are going with and what time they are expected to return.
4 At best walk the child to the gates or the entrance of the activity instead of just watching them from a distance.
5 Ensure that the child knows your emergency contact numbers and where possible the home address.
6 Ensure only authorized persons are permitted to collect your children from any activities (teachers or the authorities at the schools must be aware of this)
7 While driving, always look in your rear-view mirror to see if you are being followed; if you suspect that you are being followed try slowing down to allow the car to pass; if the vehicle also slows down and remains behind you, make some random turns into other roads or streets; if the vehicle stays with you do not go home, drive to the nearest police station, or go to a location where there are other people i.e gas stations etc.
8 As you near home, keep a look out for things that may not seem normal e.g. people hanging out in an unusual area or men just sitting in a car. If this is observed do not go home, make a block or drive around for a few minutes; if they are still in the area when you return, call the emergency police number 999 and report the matter.
9. If on arrival at home you observe an open door or window, do not enter the house; call the police and report the matter.
10. Always be aware of your general surroundings and what is happening around you.
